Abortion

Here is the biggest problem with the massive divide our country has on the abortion issue: people are treating this as if it is a POLITICAL issue.  It is NOT.  The question really boils down to this: when does life begin?

I personally believe that life begins the instant that child is conceived.

If life begins the instant a baby is conceived, then abortion is CLEARLY wrong and should be outlawed immediately.  No rational person would argue against that.  It would be murder.

If the baby is not a baby at all, and just a lifeless human fetus, then abortion should be perfectly legal.  A woman has the right to do whatever she wants to do with her own body.

So, once again, it all boils down to this: is the baby alive?

Both sides of the argument paint the other side as evil.  This needs to stop.  Pro-choicers are not murderers.  We need to stop calling them that or even inferring it at all.  A murderer has to have the intent of murder.  Remember what Jesus taught: God looks at the heart.  He looks at our INTENTIONS for our actions, not our actions themselves.  Pro-choicers do not believe the baby is alive.  They are wrong, but that does not mean we should demonize them for this.  God certainly doesn't.  God loves them the same amount the day before they get an abortion as the day after.  We need to do the same.

The debate CANNOT be filled with even an ounce of hatred....or else the debate is already lost.

The amount of animosity and hostility stirred up in this debate of pro-life vs. pro-choice is outrageous and breeds only contempt within our country.

We need to take politics out of the debate and turn it into a spiritual and scientific debate.

NO ONE (aside from psychopathic killers) would advocate for abortion to be legal if they thought that the aborted fetuses were living human beings.  THAT is the key.  The government cannot fix the abortion epidemic in this country.  We must first change the hearts and minds of the people.

As a libertarian, people in my camp are divided on the issue. The libertarian philosophy is simple: people should be free to do whatever they want as long as they don't harm anyone else.  Some libertarians argue that abortion should be legal and women should be free to have them because they are not hurting anyone else.  Of course, the other half of libertarians (like me) believe STRONGLY that they ARE indeed hurting someone else....because that unborn baby inside of them is a living person with the same natural rights entitled to it as the mother herself.  By aborting that baby, they are violating one of the most basic human rights: the right to life.

However, simply making abortion illegal will not stop the epidemic of abortions in this country.  Just as prohibiting alcohol back in the 20s didn't stop people from drinking...and outlawing marijuana doesn't stop people from smoking weed, making abortion illegal will not prevent abortions from being conducted.  We need to answer the question of WHEN DOES LIFE BEGIN? and prove it to others.

We have laws that say that you're not allowed to brings guns into schools, that doesn't stop school shootings from happening.  Laws won't do anything.  We have to stop politicizing the abortion issue, and start trying to prove to people that a human fetus is alive.  And as a living human, it has the same right to life that Jefferson wrote about in the Declaration of Independence (the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness).
